Communication from the W
Dear WHC Health Promotion Member,

The staff at the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center (The W) looks forward to assisting you with your wellness needs as we prepare to facilitate the programs you have enjoyed through the Waverly Health Center’s Health Promotion area.

We admire the great service Health Promotion provided to the community for many years. We know that this transition is difficult for many of you. However, we are confident that we can serve your needs through our facility and programs and by continuing programs at the Waverly Health Center therapy pool.

If you choose to join The W, you will quickly see that we serve people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Some of our members are focused on training for a triathlon or marathon, but most are simply attempting to get into shape, maintain their shape, or improve their health. Whether your goal is better fitness, cardiovascular fitness, or climbing stairs without assistance, we are here to help.

You can learn more about The W at one of the orientation sessions listed on the enclosed schedule. Stop at the Welcome Desk for directions to the Wet Classroom, where we will provide an overview of our programs, followed by a tour of the facility. After the tour, we will return to the Wet Classroom to answer your questions, listen to your suggestions, and register those who decide to become members.

All of the classes currently offered at the Waverly Health Center therapy pool will continue, in most cases with the same instructors. We are also looking at ways to provide open swim time in the therapy pool, and we should have more details to share at the orientation sessions.

The W will offer memberships at current Health Promotion rates and waive the new member activation fee for the months of March, April, and May. Our memberships are on a month-to-month basis, so you can opt out at any time. Seniors never pay an activation fee at The W. If you travel or spend the winter in a warmer climate, you can cancel your membership and rejoin later with no penalty.

We anticipate keeping membership rates at the current WHC level through the summer and then will gradually align them with W rates in the fall. Some of the membership fees may be slightly higher. Some program fees are lower.

 Communication From Waverly Health Center

Dear Health Promotion Member,

Waverly Health Center is implementing a cost reduction strategy to ensure the health center’s long-term financial stability. Due to decreases in patient revenue, increases in bad debt and charity care, the hospital is well short of its financial targets six months into fiscal year 2009.

The challenges we are facing have required us to make several difficult decisions. Waverly Health Center Board of Trustees has approved a wide-ranging cost reduction plan that includes the closure of Health Promotion effective February 28, 2009. In addition to the closing of Health Promotion, several operational reductions are taking place including eliminating some open positions, ending the management incentive program and senior management salary cuts.

As recent headlines have pointed out, the current economic conditions in our nation are affecting all industries, including health care. Waverly Health Center needs to take action now to ensure we are here to serve the long-term health care needs of Waverly and the surrounding communities.

Regular, physical activity is a very important part of everyone’s health and wellness. At the time Health Promotion opened, area residents had very limited exercise and fitness opportunities. This is no longer the case. Waverly now has several businesses that are dedicated to meeting these needs.

Over the past year, some members have expressed concern regarding a potential closing of Health Promotion. Many changes were made in June 2008 including a price increase and a reduction in staffing. Even with these changes, Health Promotion continues to consume hospital resources that are needed to ensure we continue to provide high quality health care for the future.

Waverly Health Center has entered into a partnership with The Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Wellness Center (The W) in an attempt to address our concerns and provide a positive opportunity for our members.

·Safety: The W fitness staff members are certified in CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available on-site. The fitness areas at The W are continuously monitored by staff.

·Price: The W will waive the new member activation fee and offer membership at the current Health Promotion rates until June 2009. In addition, The W offers scholarships based on financial need through an endowed fund.

·Fitness classes: Community members have an opportunity to join fitness classes at The W without being members. For some current Health Promotion members who only utilize our classes, their monthly fee may be less than their current membership fee.

·Therapy pool: The W staff will continue to teach water classes in WHC’s warm water therapy pool. Also, the pool will continue to be available for patients utilizing physical therapy at WHC.

·Access to equipment: The W recently purchased some specialized equipment for members with limited mobility, similar to equipment currently available in Health Promotion. They will continue to evaluate additional needs.

·Specialized fitness classes: The W currently offers a broad range of fitness classes. In addition, they will evaluate Health Promotion’s current class list to determine the need to add new ones.

·Transition: Health Promotion and The W staff will work to ensure a smooth transition for our members who decide to learn more about their facility and membership opportunities. A variety of information sessions and orientations will take place during the month of February. All current members are encouraged to attend one to learn more about The W and how your fitness needs can be met. Additional details will be mailed to our members in the next week.

·Refunds for paid membership fees: All members who have paid for membership fees beyond February will receive refunds.

·The W Advisory Board: There will be an opportunity for a few current Health Promotion members to participate in The W’s Advisory Board meetings.

The W’s mission is to promote lifelong wellness for people of all ages and levels of ability by providing outstanding facilities, programs and educational services to the campus community and the citizens of Waverly and the surrounding area. This mission clearly identifies their goal to promote the health of our community.

WHC senior leadership, Board of Trustees and I understand the important role Health Promotion has played in the lives of our members. We are saddened by the need to close Health Promotion, but feel our partnership with The W will offer many positive opportunities for our current members and the community. However, the long-term future of Waverly Health Center needs to be our top priority as we continue to serve the health care needs of Waverly and the surrounding communities.

Respectfully yours,
Mike Trachta, FACHE
Chief Executive Officer
